Earwax Blockage

Earwax is produced by glands in the skin on the outer part of the ear canal. It is medically referred to as cerumen. You may think it’s useless. But, purpose of this wax is to trap dust and other small particles and not allowing them to reach and damage the eardrum. Normally, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear with trapped dust or debris.

Why it occurs?

Secretion of an excessive amount of earwax and not clearing it effectively may cause it. When people try to clean ears on their own by placing cotton swabs or other items, it may push wax deeper into ear and result in blockage.

What are the Signs and Symptoms?

  • Fullness or plugged feeling in ear
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • Dizziness
  • Temporary/ partial hearing loss
  • Ear noise (tinnitus)

Glaucoma

Glaucoma may be defined as a group of eye conditions that lead to optic nerve damage, which causes loss of vision.

It has four main types:
  • Open-angle/chronic
  • Angle-closure/acute
  • Congenital
  • Secondary
Open-angle/chronic type is the most common.

Why it occurs?

Elevated pressure in the eye causes open-angle type. But, exact cause is unknown. When the exit of the aqueous humor fluid is suddenly blocked, angle-closure type occurs. Genetic factor can cause it. Secondary glaucoma is caused by eye diseases such as uveitis, drugs such as corticosteroids, systemic diseases, trauma etc.

What are the Symptoms?

Usually, at first there are no symptoms. But, gradually symptoms do appear. Symptoms are-

In chronic glaucoma
  • Eye pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Tunnel vision or, slow loss of side/peripheral vision
  • Occasional headaches

In acute glaucoma
  • Sudden and severe eye pain
  • Visual blurring
  • Rainbow-like halos around lights
  • Red eye
  • Pupil of the eye may be large and non-reactive to light
  • Appearance of cornea may be cloudy to the naked eye
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sudden onset of visual disturbance
  • Eye feels swollen
  • Headaches

In Secondary glaucoma (after an injury or certain diseases):
  • Red eye
  • Tearing
  • Visual blurring
  • Headaches
  • Rainbow-like halos around lights
  • Cloudiness of the front of the eye
  • Enlargement of one eye or both eyes

What can happen if it left untreated?

Some vision may have been lost permanently, so it’s very important to diagnose and treat it early. Complications are-
  • Total blindness
  • Blind spots in your peripheral vision

Why it occurs?

Acne occurs when the openings of hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells and sometimes bacteria. It can be for the following factors (Causes)-
  • Excess sebum or, oil production
  • Buildup of bacteria

Sinusitis

Sinusitis may be defined as inflammation of the lining membrane the sinuses.

Why it occurs?

Sinusitis is most often caused by viral infection. In this condition the mucous membrane lining inside of the nose and the sinuses are inflamed and the mucous membrane swells. Thus, the drainage of fluid from the sinuses into the nose and throat is blocked. Bacterial infection in the sinuses also Causes it. It results from an upper respiratory tract infection. Fungal infections may also cause it in people with impaired immune systems.

Some Medical Problems can increase the risk, such as-
  • Common Colds
  • Allergies
  • Nasal polyps or tumors
  • Enlarged or infected adenoids in children
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Immune system disorders
  • Structural problems in the nose
  • Tooth Infection (rare)

What are the Symptoms?
  • Loss of smell or Bad Breath
  • Cough that often be worse at night
  • Nasal congestion causing trouble breathing through nose and discharge (a thick, yellow or greenish) from the nose or down the back of the throat
  • Sore Throat
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headache or pain, tenderness, pressure and swelling around eyes, nose, cheeks or forehead
  • Toothache and upper jaw aching

What can happen if it left untreated?

If it is not treated, chronic sinusitis may occur.
Serious Complications do not occur commonly. But, complications may include-
  • Abscess
  • Meningitis
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection)
  • Asthma flare-ups
  • Orbital cellulitis (infection around the eye)
  • Ear Infection

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lungs. There are two main types:
  1. Non-small cell lung cancer- It is the most common type. It includes squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
  2. Small cell lung cancer.
When the cancer is made up of both types, it is called mixed small cell/large cell cancer.
When the cancer begins other part of the body and spread to the lungs, it is called metastatic cancer to the lung.

Why it occurs?

The most important cause is Cigarếtte smӦking. The earlier you started smoking and the more you smoke per day, the more chance of having it. It can also occur in people who have never smoked. Secondhand smoke or, breathing the smoke of others increases the risk of lung cancer.
It also occurs without these reasons. In these cases, cause is unknown.

What are the Symptoms?

In early stages typically lung cancer may not cause any symptoms. Gradually symptoms appear. They are-
  • Cough that doesn't go away or, changes in a chronic cough or smoker's cough
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent chest pain or intermittent, sharp chest pain
  • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Recurring bronchitis
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hoarseness
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent low fever
  • Headache

In the late stages:
  • Weakness
  • Pain and weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Bone and joint pain or tenderness
  • Hoarseness or changing voice

Edible Flower List - What You Should Know and Grow

I have to say I'm a proponent of the more practical aspects of gardening: You know, eat what you grow; stick with plant varieties that are somewhat self-sustaining for your area like native species that don't need coddling; and nurture plants and herbs in your landscape like ginger, mint and sage that can be used lots of ways (think home remedies, pest control, cooking and crafting). Influenza

Influenza or, Common Flu is a viral respiratory infection that attacks your respiratory system (nose, throat and lungs). It is commonly called the flu. The viruses that pass through the air enter body through your nose or mouth and cause flu.

Why it occurs?

Influenza viruses cause the flu. There are three types of influenza virus - A, B and C. Influenza types A and B cause epidemics of respiratory illness. Influenza occurs each winter. So, this is called seasonal flu. Influenza type C is different from types A and B. Usually it does not cause epidemics. Efforts to control the impact of influenza are aimed at types A and B, and the remainder of this discussion will be devoted only to these two types.

What are the Symptoms?
  • A fever over 100 degrees
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Headache and eye pain
  • Aches and pains in muscles and joints
  • Cough
  • Chills and sweats
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Sore Throat
  • Young children and babies may have sneezing, lethargy, poor feeding, difficulty in breathing and a febrile convulsion.

The weather in the Midwest is so perplexing I even checked one of my favorite poems, Robert Frost's Good-bye, and Keep Cold out of concern for this hot-cold-up-down weather. Frost was a genius -- and a farmer -- and this poem says it all about nature's annual balancing act. If you're a poetry lover, follow the link to the poem. Common Cold

The Common Cold is a viral infection of upper respiratory tract (nose and throat). It is medically referred to as a viral upper respiratory tract infection.

Usually it is not harmful. It is more frequent in children. But healthy adults may have it few times it each year. Most people recover from it in about a week or two.

Why it occurs?

Most common Cause is viruses. Among them Rhinovirus is common. Other viruses are oronavirus, adenovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Virus can enter the body through mouth or nose.  When affected individual coughs, sneezes or talks, the virus can spread through droplets in the air. Or, it can also spread by hand-to-hand contact with that person or by using shared objects like towels, toys, telephones, utensils etc followed by touching own eyes, nose or mouth after such contact or exposure with affected person.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms usually appear within 2 or 3 days after coming in contact with the virus. Sometimes it may take a week.

The most common cold symptoms are:
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Scratchy throat
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Low fever or no fever in adulŦs and older children generally
  • Fever around 100-102°F in young children (often)

Other:
  • Muscle aches
  • Decreased appetite
  • Headache
  • Hoarseness
  • Postnasal drip
  • Sore throat
  • Mild fatigue
