Periodontal Disease or, Gum disease is an infection that affects the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. Gum disease can be divided into following two stages-

- Primary cause is plaque deposition due to poor Oral Hygiene.

- Smokinɡ habits or, chewing tobacco
- Hormonal changes
- Heredity
- Congenital disorders
- Blood dyscrasias
- General illness
- Uncontrolled diabetes, AIDS, or leukemia
- Medications e.g. phenytoin, birth control pills etc
- Misaligned teeth
- Rough edges of fillings
- A poor diet that's low in nutrients
- Ill-fitting or unclean mouth appliances
