1.2 Million People in England Could Try to Quit Smoking

"As many as 1.2 million people in England could try to quit smoking in the New Year, figures suggest."

Cancer Research UK analysis of smoking trends since 2006 found January was the most popular month to quit, with an average of one in eight smokers trying.

The charity also said those who tried in January tended to be more successful than those trying in other months.

Try to Quit SmokingThe NHS is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the free support methods available to help smokers quit. In the New Year a series of "Getting Off Cigarettes" adverts will highlight the range of free stop-smoking support provided by the NHS. The last available figures showed around 24% of adults in England smoked.

With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small Professor Robert West The NHS Information Centre reported in September that more people had quit smoking in the first three months of 2007 than in any other quarter in anticipation of the smoking ban that came into force in the summer. Professor Robert West, director of tobacco studies at the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Unit, calculated that 13% of smokers tried to quit in January 2007 - the equivalent of every adult in Newcastle, Manchester, Coventry and Bristol. By monitoring trends in quit rates, he also found that those who chose to quit as their New Year's resolution did better than those who quit at other times of the year.

Success
He said: "We have found that almost half of all smokers actually try to quit at least once over the course of the year and one in eight try to quit in January. "But I was particularly interested to find that, contrary to popular scepticism of New Year's Resolutions, smokers who quit in January also tended to be more successful at staying off cigarettes." He said that many people did not know about the free support that was available to them on the NHS or were put off because they did not know what the services were offering.

"It's not like alcoholics anonymous, it's just practical advice," he said.

"With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small.

"The first thing is to get the right medication, whether that's nicotine replacement, zyban or champix, and the really important thing is having it explained exactly how to use it and to make sure you use enough of it."

Contrary to the NHS Information Centre report, his figures suggest that although people intended to quit because of the smoking ban, the actual number of people smoking has not yet changed.

"What we saw in Ireland was it took a few months for the effects to take hold."

What is Anemia

What is Anemia?

There is hardly any person who doesn’t know "What is Anemia". It is one of the most common types of Medical Problems in the world. People of the developing countries are affected most, as they are not concern about it. Around 30% of the total world population is anemic and half of these, some 600 million people, have iron deficiency anemia. Technically, Anemia is not a disease but a symptom of any number of disorders. But, What is Anemia? Common people defined Anemia differently. They say, “My blood is decreased.” It is not the actual thing. At first you need to know about few terms to understand it.

Our blood is composed of Blood plasma and Formed/cellular elements. Blood plasma makes 55% and Formed/cellular elements make 45% of total blood volume. Formed/cellular elements are red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. RBCs are also known as red blood corpuscles or erythrocytes which contain hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that is the main part of red blood cells and binds oxygen. It is composed of globin and heme that gives red blood cells their characteristic color. Hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues.

When you have anemia, it means, your hemoglobin level in the blood is decreased. It may be due to change in the plasma volume. In this condition cells in your body will not get enough oxygen, as oxygen can not be delivered to different tissues of the body properly.

So, actual answer of "What is Anemia" is given below-

Anemia refers to a state in which there is a reduction in the number or volume of healthy red blood cells or a decrease in the level of hemoglobin in peripheral blood below the reference level for the age and sex of the individual.

Female are more sufferer than male, specially a mother. In developing countries it is common that, they keep good foods for their children and husband. They don’t care about own health. Many of them don’t know which foods contain iron. Sometimes, even if they have the signs and symptoms, don’t care about it or they can’t realize it. Reason is that, they don’t know about "What is Anemia" clearly. But, all should know about Anemia to prevent serious complications.

Now, you know "What is Anemia". I am sure that you must ask more question about Anemia.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia Causes, Signs, Symptoms and Prevention should be known to prevent complications, as anemia is symptom of many Medical Problems. Anemia is the most common blood condition not only in developing countries but also in United States.

What is Anemia?

What are Anemia Causes?

Decrease in production or a reduction in number of red blood cells or hemoglobin is the main cause anemia. Factors that may cause different Kinds of Anemia are-
  • Peripheral causes- blood loss, haemolysis and hypersplenism
  • Poor diet lacking in iron, vitamin B-12 and folic acid
  • Family history (sickle cell anemia)
  • Menstruation
  • Certain medications
  • Pregnancy
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Certain Surgery that removes part of the stomach or intestines

Few Medical Problems or chronic conditions where anemia occurs-
  • Blood diseases
  • Problems with bone marrow such as lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma
  • Cancer or invasion by malignant cells
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematous
  • Liver failure
  • Kidney failure
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Certain infections
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and celiac disease
  • Malaria
  • Kala-azar

What are the Kinds of Anemia?

What are the Anemia Signs?
  • Pallor of skin, conjunctiva, mucus membrane and nail bed
  • High cardiac output state
  • Tachycardia
  • Low blood pressure, especially when you stand up

Following signs can help to find the different Kinds of Anemia-
  • Koilonychia – spoon-shaped nails seen in iron deficiency
  • anaemia
  • Jaundice – found in haemolytic anaemia
  • Bone deformities – found in thalassaemia major
  • Leg ulcers – found in sickle-cell disease

What are the Anemia Symptoms?

Mild anemia may be asymptomatic. Problems develop slowly.
Common Anemia Symptoms-
  • Feeling of weakness or fatigue- tiredness, lassitude, reduced exercise tolerence
  • Generalized muscular weakness
  • Effort dyspnea or shortness of breath
  • Palpitation
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Breathlessness
  • Blurring of vision
  • Sore tongue
  • Problems concentrating or thinking
  • Feeling grumpy

Anemia Symptoms in severe cases-
  • Faintness or passing out
  • Pounding in ear
  • Effort angina
  • Poor concentration
  • Giddiness
  • Claudicatio intermittans
  • Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)
  • Bounding pulse
  • High blood pressure
  • Systolic flow murmur
  • Menstrual changes in female
  • Loss of libido
  • Ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement)
  • Symptoms of Heart failure
  • Worsening of Heart problems and Heart attack
Symptoms are more prominent in older patients.

What are the Sites of examination?
  • Lower palpebral conjunctiva
  • Dorsal (upper) surface of tongue
  • Palm and sole
  • Whole body skin
  • In infants: Skin

How can Anemia be Diagnosed?

When you will go to a doctor, he/she will perform a physical examination. He will ask the symptoms and look for the signs (I described above). Doctor may suggest a complete blood cell (CBC) count which helps to detect and confirm Anemia. Additional Test may be suggested to detect the Kinds of Anemia. Tests are-

1. Routine investigations:
  • Estimation of hemoglobin
  • Total count of R.B.C
  • Red cell indices
  • Examination of peripheral blood film
  • ESR

2. Special investigation:
  • Bone marrow examination
  • Biochemical examination
  • Hemoglobin Electrophoresis

What can Happen, if Anemia Left Untreated?

If anemia left untreated, different complications may occur. Anemia Complications are-
  • Arrhythmia - Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Heart failure
  • Tissue Hypoxia - As mentioned earlier, hemoglobin has the important role of delivering oxygen to all parts of the body for consumption and carries back carbon dioxide back to the lung to exhale it out of the body. I said above in “What is Anemia” that the hemoglobin deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. But, in Anemia this process may be failed and lead to tissue hypoxia (low levels of oxygen in the body).

What is the way of Anemia Prevention?

Ways of Anemia Prevention are-
  1. Eat lot of iron rich foods. Sources of iron are-
    • Rich sources- liver, heart, kidney, meat.
    • Good sources- green leafy vegetables, pulses, cereals, fish, dried fruits, oatmeal, apples, dried beans, molasses.
    • Poor sources- milk, wheat, polished rice.
  2. Coffee or tea reduces absorption of iron. So, when you eat iron rich food, don't drink it.
  3. To prevent vitamin B-12 deficiency eat liver, kidney, milk, chicken, fish, curd etc.
  4. To increase folic acid eat green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, liver, milk, egg, kidney etc.

How to Get That Ripped Six Pack Set of Abs Quick

This the fastest way to get a six pack set of abs.

1: To build really great abs it's important to first understand what abs do.
Their full name is 'rectus abdominis'. The 'rectus' bit, is Latin for 'straight, proper, upright'. Contrary to popular opinion, the abs primary job is not to curl you up into a ball, but they work together with the back muscles to maintain correct posture and stabilize the spine. Therefore training your abs without training your back will create an imbalance in the musculature that supports your spine.

These muscles are not just for show! So the best exercises for abs are ones that force your entire core to go into overdrive to support your spine. Some exercises that do this are squats and deadlifts. These exercises will train your entire core to work together to do what it is designed to do. At the same time they will also train a lot of other muscles (eg glutes and quads), and this promotes even more rapid fat loss as the body recovers.

2: Do crunches-Lie on the floor (with or without a mat) your arms in front of your chest.
Bend your knees up as far as they go. Do not place both hands behind your head. Placing both hands behind your head can cause lower back problems in the long run as it places unnecessary stress on that part of your body from pulling on your head and neck. Another alternative is to cross your arms in front of your chest and lightly place your finger tips behind your ears, without pulling on your neck.

Now raise your shoulders (upper torso) towards your knees, using strictly your abdominal muscles. It is very important not to lift your entire back off the floor, as this can cause back strain, and the extended movement does not help you develop six pack abs any faster. The most important part of the crunch is the initial flexing of your abs as you lift your shoulders off the floor. As soon as you begin lifting off the floor exhale through your mouth, ending with a gasp once your shoulders are off the floor. Then pause for a second once you are at the top of the crunch and exhale the last bit of air from your diaphragm while flexing your abs. The proper breathing and flexing make all the difference. Now lower back down slowly and controlled while inhaling through your nose, just until your shoulder blades touch the ground. Do not let your head touch the ground and repeat.

3: Situps Lie on the floor, feet on the floor, knees up and fingers placed behind your ears or hands crossed on your chest.
Sit all the way up, lifting your lower back off the floor along with your shoulder blades. Lower yourself down. Repeat. Once this becomes relatively easy for you (i.e. you can do a quite a bit with ease) start adding more challenges. Find an incline bench or do these with an exercise ball. Once you "graduate" from that, do weighted sit ups. Hold a weight on your chest while you do these. As these become easier, hold heavier and heavier weights.

4: Do Bicycle Crunches. Lift your feet off the ground while doing the sit ups by alternating each leg in the air.
Bicycling, pretending to pedal while sitting up. Alternating knee touches. If your hands are behind your head, bring your left knee up to touch your right elbow and then your right knee to the left elbow.

5: Do Leg Lifts.
Lie on the floor, legs straight out, hands at your sides. Lift your legs straight up (not bending your knees at all) until they're at a 90 degree angle (or close). Lower your legs and repeat without letting your legs touch the floor. For more challenge there is equipment at most gyms that will allow you to raise yourself up using your arms as support and dangle your legs. You can perform leg lifts there too. If you're using this piece of equipment, you can make it easier by just raising your knees to your chest. It's more difficult to raise your legs to a horizontal position with your legs straight. This helps firm up the lower abdomen. If you're truly a monster, try doing leg lifts with a medicine ball hanging from your feet. Or hang from a pull up bar and raise your legs in front of you all the way up to the bar.

6: Do Jackknife Sit Ups.
Lie down flat on the floor. Place your hands on the ground to your sides for balance; you can pick them up as you get used to the movement. Simultaneously raise your knees and torso so that your knees and face meet on an imaginary line extending from your pelvis to the ceiling. You should be able to kiss your knees at the top of the motion. Your legs will naturally fold bringing your feet towards your hips, much like a jackknife. Lie back down (i.e. "spread out") and repeat. Place a weight between your feet when you think you can handle it.

7: Static Hold and Side Statics.
Put your body into the push-up position but with your elbows on the floor, and your whole body flat. This position is known as the static hold position and it trains your core (including your abs) to hold the body in place which is the real purpose of your abs. Hold this position for as long as possible. Beginners should be aiming to start off with at least 45 seconds, while seasoned ab workers are known to achieve over 5 minute static holds. To perform the side static hold, roll onto one side of your body and lift into the same position as before, but this time only one arm will be on the ground with the other arm pointed straight up the air and your non weight bearing leg resting on your bottom leg. Once again, hold this for as long as possible.

8: Train Your Oblique Muscles.
It's not as important to work on your oblique muscles at first, but eventually you'll want to start working these too. These are the muscles to either side of your stomach. There are multiple ways to do this and anything that includes twisting your torso against a resistance counts. There are twisting machines at gyms, you can twist while you do sit-ups, you can do side bends, you can twist side to side with a medicine ball in hand, etc. Be aware though, that many beginners tend to have weak obliques compared to their abs (it simply isn't used as much in daily life) so go easy on the sides at first.

Do the Scientific Best Abs Exercise. Researchers at the San Diego State University, found that there are certain abs exercises that triggers most muscular activity. The winner was the "bicycle maneuver":
  • Lie on the floor; make sure your lower back is pressed on the ground.
  • Take your hands behind your ears. Then bring up your knees at a 45 degree angle.
  • Start doing a bicycle pedaling motion. Touch your elbow with the opposite knee (right elbow with left knee and so on, alternating)
  • Breathe in a relaxed and even manner throughout the exercise.

Fish Oil and Your Heart

Fish oil and your heart

Recent reports on the health benefits of fish oil sound almost too good to be true. The omega-3 fatty acids that it contains have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes and slow the formation of plaques in the arteries, and they may also lower blood pressure.

Accordingly, the American Heart Association now recommends that healthy people eat fatty fish at least twice a week (individuals with heart disease should consume 1,000 milligrams of omega-3s per day and may want to discuss capsule supplements with their doctors). The latest studies go even further, demonstrating that the benefits of omega-3s extend beyond the heart and exploring exactly how these fatty acids do their good work in our bodies.

Research conducted at the University of Barcelona showed that obese mice living on a diet enriched with omega-3s displayed improved sensitivity to insulin. If the finding holds true for humans, this insulin response could translate to a reduced risk of diabetes. Other scientists are garnering evidence for the anecdotal claims that fish oils improve cognitive functioning.

Last fall an American and Canadian team reported on three studies in which infants were randomly fed standard or high-omega-3 formulas; those who consumed the latter performed better on a problem-solving test. An independent, large-scale study in Sweden found that teenage males who eat fish weekly have intelligence scores 7 percent higher than do those who eat fish less often. Consuming fish more than once per week correlated with intelligence scores that were 12 percent higher than those of infrequent fish eaters.

Meanwhile, an international team has tracked how one of the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), carries out its protective functions. The scientists determined that the body converts DHA to a compound called resolvin D2, which prevents neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) from sticking to the walls of blood vessels and initiating an inflammation response. In mice with sepsis, resolvin D2 reduced the widespread swelling that usually accompanies the condition without impairing the immune system’s ability to fight the underlying infection.

A similar mechanism may be behind fish oil’s cardiovascular benefits, since inflammation is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke. “Resolvin D2 is an excellent prototype for a new anti-inflammatory drug,” says pharmacologist Mauro Perretti of Queen Mary University of London, one of the study’s authors. A Massachusetts-based company, Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, is already conducting clinical trials of resolvins for the treatment of inflammatory problems, including asthma and dry eyes.

Study Finds Mismatch Between Kids and Vitamins

medicineNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Vitamin supplements are meant to fill-in where diet may be lacking, but a new study finds that U.S. kids may not be getting some of the most needed nutrients from their vitamin pills and the kids taking vitamins may not be the ones who need them the most.

Looking at the diets and supplement use of more than 7,000 kids, researchers found that between the ages of nine and 18 many had low levels of certain vitamins and minerals, and few took supplements, while younger kids had adequate levels of most nutrients and were possibly getting too much of some vitamins and minerals.

Most children under eight, for instance, got the nutrition they needed from the food they ate, regardless of whether or not they took supplements, the study found.

Even with the use of supplements, however, more than a third of children failed to get sufficient calcium and vitamin D. And users sometimes overloaded on essential nutrients such as iron and vitamin A. Zinc and folate were consumed to excess across all age groups.

"We don't know if these excessive amounts cause any harm," said Regan Bailey, a nutritional epidemiologist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, who led the study. But, Bailey and her coauthors note in The Journal of Pediatrics, their findings suggest that makers of children's vitamins should consider reformulating their products to better match kids' needs and modern diets.

Bailey's team used dietary surveys to assess mineral and vitamin intake among children between the ages of two and 18 who took part in a major government health survey between 2003 and 2006. About 40 percent of children between ages two and eight take a supplement, the study found. Supplement usage was lower among older kids - 29 percent of kids between nine and 13 years old took them and 26 percent of teenagers did.

White children were more likely than their black or Hispanic counterparts to take a supplement, commonly a multivitamin/mineral. Overall, supplement users and nonusers got roughly similar levels of 15 different vitamins and minerals from food sources alone. But users were also more likely to get recommended doses of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin A and vitamin C from food than nonusers.

When supplement use was considered, researchers found users had much better nutrient levels than nonusers. Across all age groups, taking supplements improved intake of calcium and vitamins A, C, D and E. Calcium and vitamin D consumption often fell below recommended levels, however, even among kids who took supplements.

More than a third of kids using supplements did not get enough calcium. The recommended amount is between 200 and 1,000 milligrams a day for children up to age eight, and 1,300 mg per day for kids age nine and up and teens. Most children between ages two and eight who didn't take supplements failed to get adequate levels of calcium and vitamins D and E.

"This is unfortunate," Bailey said. "Calcium and vitamin D are critical during this age for bone growth and development." Teens fell short on several other essential nutrients as well, including magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins A, C and E.

Vitamin E is involved in immune function, vitamin A in vision and bone growth and magnesium promotes nerve function and cellular energy production. At the same time, supplement users were more likely to boost consumption of certain nutrients - such as zinc, folate, iron and vitamin A - above recommended upper limits.

The long-term effects of high doses of these micronutrients in children are unknown, the report noted. The bottom line, Bailey explained, was that for some kids who would have been deficient in some vitamins and minerals, supplements were a help.

"For older children, taking supplements added nutrients for which intake would have been inadequate from food alone," she told Reuters Health. Bailey added that the problem of overloading affected children under age eight the most. The findings highlight the gap between supplement formulations for children and their needs as identified in national research data, Bailey explained.

"Manufacturers should tailor levels of nutrients in their products to help consumers meet, but not exceed, nutrient recommendations," she said, adding: "This is particularly salient for calcium and vitamin D."

Bailey, who works for the federal Office of Dietary Supplements, declined to elaborate on what specific changes could be made by supplement makers or parents.

"The ODS is here to help consumers; we do not make recommendations on supplement use," she said.

7 Ways to Lose Weight

7 Ways to Lose Weight

weight loss1. Give up wheat!
Many nutritionists are against this recommendation, based on the consideration that wheat is the base of food pyramid, and pasta, bread and cereals can not be removed from the menu of a healthy man, without leading to disastrous consequences. On the other hand, wheat is among the top seven allergenic agents, which many people have a high Sensitivity, without being aware of it.

2. Give up milk!
Now you probably wondering what's left to eat you, but you must remember that these changes should not be drastic and sudden. You will not get any risk of osteoporosis, especially if you make sure you get calcium from other foods, and do not have to give up all dairy products.

3. NO sugar!
For many of us this is the most difficult step, but keep in mind that this is the one who will give the best results.

4. Try a diet with fruits and vegetables!
Three days in which to eat only soup, fruit and raw vegetables with a little olive oil and will give your digestive system a break from all the toxins and unhealthy foods that you eat every day.

5. Do not drink alcohol!
The impact of this change varies from person to person. If you find it hard to give up your daily glass of wine, remember that alcohol is a kind of "super sugar" and that has no benefits, that you get from fruits or vegetables.

6. Try to count calories.
Try at least for a while, as a strategy. You might find that underestimate the amount of calories that contain your diet. Moreover, some people think they can eat anything as long as eating certain foods are considered hypo-caloric. Counting calories will help you realize where you are wrong in your diet.

7. Give up your eating habits!
If your meals are hyper-protein, try a vegetarian diet for several days. If you do eat only fruit and vegetables, get protein! Sometimes this makes it easier to change over the period of stagnation in the transition from a diet and changing the menu to see what will be the sensitivity of different types of food, sensitivities which you did not know.

Not all of the seven strategies are required, and not all have the same effect, because the results vary from individual to individual. Consider them experiments that will help you know yourself better and lose weight faster!

Top Ten High Fiber Low Calorie Foods

BY Erika Yigzaw, ACHS CIO
fruitAre there magic foods that we can eat all day and still lose weight? Not really. But there are some foods that are relatively low in calories yet have high nutritive value, either because they are high in fiber, phytonutrients such as antioxidants, or high in protein. These are foods to keep handy in the pantry, refrigerator, or garden and eat daily. Train your family – particularly children – to snack on these top ten foods rather than chips and sodas and you’ll be ahead of the nutrition curve before you know it!

To pick these top ten foods, I looked at nutritional value, energy density[1], and volume. I want to focus on foods that provide a lot of bang for the buck (i.e., keep us full and have high nutritional value with fewer calories than other choices). Fruits and vegetables with lots of water are often lower energy density[2] , but my primary criteria for the list is fiber. Why? Fiber is critical. Remember your grandmother telling you to eat more “roughage”? Well she was right! We need at least 25 grams a day, and ideally 35 grams a day, for a healthy bowel. I think the correlation between high fiber diets and lower cancer rates is not just from fiber but is synergistic, since most high fiber diets are high in fruits and vegetables, which are also high in antioxidants and other phytonutrients. But, fiber is clearly also very important and few Americans get enough.

Here is my current top ten list of high fiber low calorie foods:

  1. Raspberries rank as one of the highest high fiber low calorie foods, at 8.0 grams of fiber and just 64 calories per serving (1-cup) (1 calorie per raspberry!)[3, 4]. They are delicious and we can grow our own here in Oregon! Yay!
  2. Pears have about 5.1 grams of fiber and only 51 calories for a medium sized pear[5]. They are easy to pack in a lunch and store well. They are also easy to grow here in Oregon.
  3. Apples provide about 4.4 grams of fiber, at roughly 55 calories for a small apple. Choose organic as apples are on the EWG dirty dozen list 2012[6]. Apples are easy to grow here in Oregon and many parts of the US, with the newer columnar varieties letting you grow pounds of fruit in a small garden or even a container!
  4. Blueberries provide about 3.5 grams of fiber, and roughly 40 calories for 50 berries. Choose organic as blueberries are on the EWG dirty dozen list 2012[7]. Again, blueberries grow well here in the Pacific North West, although take a few years to fruit well. Mulch with wood chips as they love acidic soil.
  5. Strawberries provide about 3.3 grams of fiber and average about 2 calories per strawberry. Choose organic as strawberries are on the EWG dirty dozen list 2012[8]. Grow even a few strawberry plants in a barrel or tuck them into ornamental garden beds where the foliage stays a lovely dark green throughout the summer while providing you with berries!
  6. Black beans – 1 cup has 15 grams of fiber – along with 15 grams of protein – and just 227 calories[9]
  7. Whole-wheat spaghetti weighs in at 6.3 g of fiber per serving and approximately 174 calories per 1-cup serving (always check the label as brands vary)
  8. One cup of oatmeal provides 4.0 grams of fiber and about 60 calories per serving
  9. Whole wheat or multigrain breads offer 1.9 grams per slice and about 65 calories per slice (always check the label as brands vary)
  10. Cooked peas, at a whopping 8.8 g of fiber and a low 67 calories per cup serving size. Turn a cup of peas into instant soup with a stick blender and some vegetable stock.

So that’s our top ten, but there are some other notable additions:

  • Boiled turnip greens, which offer about 5.0 grams of fiber per cup sized serving and about 48 calories
  • Raw carrots offer 1.7 grams of fiber and 21 calories for a small carrot. Raw, fresh carrots are about 88 percent water.
  • Broccoli has 5.1 g of fiber and about 52 calories per cup. Steamed broccoli is best for cholesterol lowering benefits. 100 calories of broccoli gives you 10 grams of fiber!
  • Grapefruit is about 90 percent water, and one contains approximately 3.4 grams of fiber – more than 13 percent of your daily fiber needs – and about the same amount as a cup of strawberries, cabbage, cauliflower or beets. The amount of fiber in one grapefruit exceeds that found in a banana or in 1 cup of celery or bell peppers. An entire grapefruit has just 78 calories. Grapefruit also contains vitamin C and pectin[10]. Good news too – grapefruit is on the EWG clean fifteen list – meaning they are one of the 15 produce items lowest in pesticides[11]!
  • Raisins, which provide 1.6 grams of fiber per 1.5 ounce serving and roughly 42 calories for a 5-ounce box. Note that grapes have more volume for the same fiber and calories so are an excellent choice! Grapes are another dirty dozen item so choose organic!
  • Just one cup of barley has 13.6 grams of fiber in 270 calories – add a cup of barley to your vegetable soup for a hearty winter way to increase fiber! Plus barley is a great source of selenium[12]!

What are foods to leave out?

  • Canned baked beans – a favorite in New Zealand and the United Kingdom – pack a lot of fiber per serving, but also lots of sugar and sodium.
  • Processed foods – yes a processed food with added fiber is better than one without, but stick to the foods that mother nature made high in fiber for optimum health.
  • Act: Using your favorite app (mine is MyFitnessPal available on the app store and at myfitnesspal.com) track your food intake and see how much fiber you’re really getting! Try a fiber day and see how much you can pack in!

Women With Diabetes Also Experience Problems Sexs

During this sexual disorder caused by diabetes is more commonly associated with men. But it turned out to women with diabetes are also susceptible to interference in their sex lives are becoming less satisfied.

Men who have diabetes have long been known to be more prone to sexual problems, especially impotence. But not much is known about the sexual effects in women with diabetes.

"It is very understudied, especially in women who are older," said study leader Dr. Alison Huang of the University of California, San Francisco.

Based on a survey involving nearly 2300 women aged 40-80 years in California, Huang and his colleagues found more than a third of women who received insulin treatment said it was or very dissatisfied with his sex life.

And about a quarter of women with diabetes who do not use insulin also reported similar dissatisfaction. Whereas in women who do not have diabetes, sexual dissatisfaction was only occurs in 1 in 5 women.

"It's not that women with diabetes are not interested in sexual activity. His interest equal to people without diabetes, but he had more sexual problems, one of which is dissatisfaction," said Huang.

Known women who use insulin more often complain about problems with lubrication or lubrication and orgasm compared with non-diabetic women. While women with complications of diabetes such as heart and kidney disease only have sex about once a month.

Among men, believed to be caused due to accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries that supply blood to the penis, but this does not apply to women. Huang said the overall financial burden of chronic disease and neurological damage may be the cause.

"If you are a woman who has diabetes to avoid complications it can help prevent the development of sexual problems, namely with diabetes follow a special diet and exercise regularly," said Huang.

Reasons Due To Diabetes Revealed Fossil Feces

Lifestyle of modern man is always being compared to ancient human, supposedly much healthier so seldom get diabetes. Now the assumption is proved true thanks to the discovery of fossil feces belong to Native Americans.

Fossilized feces are estimated to last 1,000 years old were found in desert areas in the southwestern United States. Because of the time there were many immigrants from Europe, it is believed the owner is a native who inhabited the area.

Based on the results of molecular analysis, the scientists concluded that the content and feces in the fossil record is very high. Fiber content compared to the modern human feces, the fiber is said to reach 20 to 30 times more.
This difference is believed to be associated with diet or food choices at the time the natives, which is more dominated by pear, yucca and beans. Compared with modern humans consume more and more junk food, diet is certainly a lot healthier.

"When we observe the natives of the southwestern United States, there is a change in diet in the 20th century. They became acquainted with foods that have very high glycemic index," said Karl Reinhard of the University of Nebrasca Livecience.

Reinhard is the glycemic index is a number that indicates whether a food is broken down easily into simple sugars, the range is between 1-100. Southwestern Native Americans 1,000 years ago is estimated to consume more foods with low glycemic index that is 23.

The higher the glycemic index of a food, the higher the risk of diabetes is caused due to the sugar solution can be faster than energy consumption, especially of modern humans moving further apart. This condition can lead to diabetes mellitus or excess levels of sugar, especially type 2.

Genetically, southwestern Native Americans have a higher susceptibility than the Caucasian race in terms of diabetes risk. Therefore, if 1,000 years ago not many who get diabetes, it means his diet is very healthy.

5 Weight Loss Suplements

You're doing a diet right now? Obviously a lot of things you have to do to get a slim body ideal. With exercise training also. But not yet get maximum results. Many think that they have added to the muscle than in the fat, but in fact what happens is the fat percentage is increased.
If all that happens to you, it will be frustrating. Then the result is weight loss becomes a very difficult thing to achieve. There are several ways to overcome this, one of which is the addition of fat-burning supplements to your diet. With this supplement may also play a role in your body fitness.
Size of the weight loss is different. And with a weight loss supplement is also different. Some of the original herbs, but also in consumption can not be in vain. You should consult your family doctor before starting to take a new supplement.

Listed here are 5 varieties of fat-burners you'll find at any health store.

Thermogenics

Thermogenesis is what happens when the body starts metabolizing its stored fat cells. Therefore, thermogenics are products that stimulate the body to lose fat more quickly.

Tea extracts can be powerful thermogenics. Many products contain a mix of tea extracts, plus guarana (herbal ephedra) for extra energy and dandelion to fight bloating.

The scale of the fat metabolizing effect is uncertain, & outcomes vary widely between folk. Nevertheless, thermogenic mixes really are a favoured inclusion to many successful diet menus.

Caution-: Take these supplements only as directed. Taking too much can make you dehydrated or can overstimulate your heart.

Carbohydrate Blockers

Carbs act like sugar in our bodies. Way too much carbohydrates can result in insulin resistance, that may raise the storage of extra fat. Carbohydrate blockers keep us from eating numerous carbs, reducing insulin resistance & encouraging weight-loss.

Carbohydrate blockers use two main ingredients to accomplish this: Green tea extract, which is shown to restrict the transformation of carbs into blood glucose, and white kidney beans, that are thought to get a comparable result.

Much like thermogenics, there is certainly a good amount of anecdotal proof for both sides of the carb blocker discourse. Some insist the products work, while others maintain that you could achieve even better results when you eat fewer carbs.

The jury continues to be out, with scientific particulars limited by a handful of animal tests. Still, if you're interested in soaking up too many carbohydrates, carbohydrate blockers could possibly be helpful.

Thyroid Stimulators

The thyroid gland behaves as a regulator for the metabolism. If it becomes sluggish due to injury or illness, our fat burning also slows down. Some supplements are specific to stimulating a thyroid gland and quicken fat burning.

These herbal remedies classically include tyrosine, manganese, selenium, & guggul. There exists a hotly contested study that shows guggul supplementation leads to more fat loss than diet & exercise on their own.

Before using a thyroid enhancer, go to a doctor to get your thyroid tested. Huge numbers of people are afflicted by an underactive thyroid. If you're one, a drugs will work better than a supplement.

Cortisol Reducers

When our bodies are become stressed (and whose body isn't currently?), they develop a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol encourages our bodies to protect themselves. One of the ways money is simply by hoarding fat, mainly in the abdominal region.

Cortisol blockers often contain bitter orange peel extract, a form of herbal ephedra. Evidence is scant, some dieters think that cortisol blockers enable them to shed weight. Most experts doubt the efficacy of cortisol blockers.

When you have heart problems, or maybe if you're currently taking other medicines, seek a doctor's recommendations before a cortisol blocker. They are linked to cardiac events in otherwise well people.

Herbs and Vitamins

Other herbs and vitamins are credited with boosting your bodys fat-metabolism. Included in this are, ginger, red pepper cayenne, B vitamins, Ascorbic Acid, calcium, and others.

If you want to experiment with their effect on excess fat loss, get a multivitamin which has some or all of the ingredients. Ginger and cayenne pepper can easily be added to the meal you cook, and low-fat milk products are full of calcium.
