Talk of dental implant and treatments and the first idea that comes to the mind of patients are misconceptions that can even make situations worse. Such wrong viewpoints and ideas about dentistry among general public needs to be cleared up, to prevent any complication that may arise due to untimely treatment of dental ill health. Timely treatments can avoid complicating simple dental problems and that's why all misconceptions related to dentistry needs to be cleared with relevant information.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS AMONG PATIENTS ABOUT DENTISTRY?
An insight into individual behavior and fear of dental treatment among patients has revealed the following misconceptions that are widely affecting dental health of the concerned individuals:
[1] First and foremost among the misconceptions is the hesitation of teeth extraction during the rainy season. Patients usually think that extracting their teeth during the rainy season would affect their health. However, the fact is somewhat different. Teeth can be extracted, if indicated, in any sort of weather which has no role to play in dental treatments.
[2] Next, it is a common belief that extraction of upper teeth can affect the brain or the eyes. This wrong idea is not supported by any scientific proof; thus, extraction of any tooth does not affect any of these organs.
[3] Some patients with cavities in their teeth are quite surprised at being told so; they claim that they do not eat sweets! This has given rise to another dental misconception. Sweets are not the sole cause for cavities; any food debris can cause decay, if allowed to remain on the surfaces of the teeth. Even drinking milk can be a cause for cavities if the mouth is not rinsed after consuming the same.
[4] Next misconception is about tooth replacement. Patients often don't replace one or two teeth if lost, thinking that they have to wait till they lose all teeth to replace them. In dentistry, even a single tooth can and should be replaced.
[5] Some patients do not want cavities in their children's milk teeth to be filled as they believe "they are going to fall anyway". As per expert dentists, it is always advisable to fill such cavities to avoid premature loss of these teeth and attendant problems to the permanent successors.
[6] Orthodontic treatment often requires extraction of one or more premolars; some parents are apprehensive about extraction of sound teeth and believe that the treatment may affect their child's health. Medically proven, such extractions do not affect child's health in any way and fears to the contrary are thus unfounded.
[7] As per the thought of some patients, cleaning of teeth causes loosening of the same and creates gaps between them; however, such fears are not grounded in fact. Cleaning of teeth is done by ultrasonic instruments, which dislodge deposits on teeth. They cannot damage the enamel or loosen teeth at all.
[8] A visit to the dentist is often dictated by pain in a tooth; even if aware of a cavity in the tooth, the patient delays fearing that the dentist will forces him to undergo through painful treatment process. Timely consultation with the dentist will save such patients from undergoing through a lot of pain and will also give the dentist a chance to save the tooth.
The fore mentioned misconceptions are often the greatest stumbling blocks to effective and conservative dental treatments. If these myths are exploded, the time and expense involved in dental treatment can also be reduced considerably.
