Dental caries or tooth decay is one of the major oral health problems in the world. It is caused by a specific type of bacteria that produces acid that destroys the tooth's enamel and the dentin. There are several types of bacteria that live inside the mouth. Babies are also prone to caries they usually occur on the front teeth of the baby. This is due to too much sugar found in milk formula, snacks, or artificial sweeteners on the baby's teeth.

Infant caries can be serious. It may affect his or her ability to chew, smile, and speak. It can also affect the growth of adult teeth. If infant caries are left untreated it could led to pain, infection, and discomfort to the baby. In general infant caries may prevent baby teeth to develop properly and this could eventually result to baby's poor eating habits, difficulty in speech, and adult teeth may grow crooked or crowded.

Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent infant caries. It is the parent's responsibility to keep and maintain the baby's oral hygiene and later tech him or her how to properly clean the teeth.

Caries occur when there is too much sugar on the baby's teeth. When there is too much sugar there are a lot of happy bacteria feeding on it. These bacteria feeds, reproduce, and create acids that can be harmful to the baby's teeth. The sugar build-up can be found in:

There are also wrong practices in bottle feeding the baby and this should be avoided to prevent caries. One example of this is when the baby fell asleep with the baby bottle in his mouth the sugar can sit on and coat the teeth eventually often leading to tooth decay.

Symptom of infant decay is brown or dark spots on the teeth. It can occur in any of the teeth but usually the upper front teeth are more likely to be affected. Baby caries if left untreated could lead to complications such as:

PainCrooked adult teethDifficulty in chewingInfectionSpeech difficulty

Infant caries can be prevented just by being maintaining a healthy oral hygiene. Babies, young adults, and adults alike can benefit from these healthy practices. Increasing the intake of calcium rich foods and supplements will greatly increase teeth and bone health.
