What are the Liver Cirrhosis Symptoms?
The clinical presentation of liver cirrhosis is highly variable. Some patients are completely asymptomatic or, some patients may have few symptoms. Some of the symptoms may be nonspecific. Liver Cirrhosis Symptoms are-
- Anorexia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Vague RUQ pain
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Fever
- Yellow color in the skin, mucus membranes, or eyes (jaundice)
- Amenorrhea
- Edema or swelling in your legs
- Impotence
- Infertility
- Muscle cramps
- Weight loss
- Upper abdominal discomfort
- Confusion
- Easy bruising or Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
- Vomiting blood or blood in stools
- Pale or clay-colored stools
What are the Liver Cirrhosis Signs?
- Jaundice
- Scleral icterus
- Parotid and lacrimal gland enlargement
- Digital clubbing
- Dupuytren’s contracture
- Hepatomegaly (although liver may also be small)
- Ascites
- Gastrointestinal bleeding (e.g. varices)
- Hepatic encephalopathy
- Circulatory changes - Spider telangiectasia, palmar erythema, cyanosis
- Endocrine changes - Loss of libido, hair loss; Men: gynaecomastia, testicular atrophy, impotence; Women: breast atrophy, irregular menses, amenorrhoea
- Haemorrhagic tendency - Bruises, purpura, epistaxis
- Portal hypertension - Splenomegaly, collateral vessels, variceal bleeding
- Pigmentation
When to make an appointment with doctor?
Call a doctor if you have liver cirrhosis signs and symptoms.
Go to the emergency room immediately, if you have:
- Abdominal pain
- Sudden abdominal swelling or ascites
- Fever above 100.5 °F, or a fever that does not go away
- Repeated vomiting
- Confusion or bizarre behavior
- Difficulty breathing
- Yellowing skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Diarrhea
- Blood in your vomit
- Blood in your stool or black, tarry stools
